Stage 4 - Sun Spots by Alison Nicholls

Sun Spots by Alison Nicholls,          acrylic, 30 x 30"
So... finally... here is the finished painting. If you have been following the various stages (see previous posts) - thank you for your patience! Sun Spots is 30 x 30" and I can officially say that I have acquired a taste for working large! This causes logistical problems in the studio because I don't paint on an easel so I need plenty of flat space. I also like to tip the painting this way and that to move the loose washes of color around. And storage becomes a consideration. But even so, I see plenty more large pieces in my artistic future!

Cheetahs (detail) by Alison Nicholls
In the previous posts you can see how I came to the composition. The painting itself was a pleasure to create as I was able to use my largest brushes, with entire sweeps of the arm, to add those vivid hot colors. Once the washes were finished I began work on the cheetahs and then it sat for some time during the holidays and I thought it was finished. But when I came back to it, I realized it needed something else. So I added some thicker, textured acrylic in the top and bottom left corners, to give it some weight around the edges. Then it just needed a name. Sun Spots sums it up for me. Do you agree?

Until next time...
