| Cheetah thumbnail sketches by Alison Nicholls, actual sizes 1.5 x 2.5" |
After rather a long Holiday Hiatus (!) I'm back with the stages of my latest painting, which is currently still untitled. It was inspired by the time I spent in July 2011 watching 3 cheetahs in the Serengeti in the midday heat. Not only were they were overly optimistic about the size of prey they should hunt, but they were also completely unconcerned about concealing themselves. As a result they were not successful in their hunting attempts!
Although my painting was initially inspired by my field sketches of these 3 rather incompetent brothers, I tend to drift quickly away from my sketches and compose an entirely new piece, based partly on my memories and partly on the desire to create an interesting or even intriguing painting. My thumbnail sketches show the 3 cheetahs in various poses. My intention was to start the composition higher on the left and lower it towards the right. Space is a recurring theme in my work and in the 2nd thumbnail you can see how I left plenty of free space to allow for interesting washes of color.
In the next stage - how I completely changed my mind and got rid of 1 cheetah!
Until next time...
