Secretary Bird - Original Acrylic Painting by Alison Nicholls

Secretary Bird                   10 x 8" acrylic by Alison Nicholls
A Secretary Bird strides across the African grasslands as if it owns the place! It can appear graceful and elegant, particularly with its tall crest extended. It can also look comical as it cocks its head to stare at the ground. But not so comical when viewed up close. Then you see the sturdy scaled legs, the curved hook of a beak and the beady eye which catches any tiny movement among the grasses. From the viewpoint of a snake or frog this is just another highly evolved hunter to be avoided on the African plains!

Until next time...

  2. Brilliantly painted! You have made the acrylic look like watercolor.

  3. Thanks for both your comments. I have been using acrylic in the same way that I use watercolor, because I love the loose washes and amazing effects that can be obtained. The advantage to acrylic, which I'm now painting on watercolor canvas, is framing without glass (even though this was always possible with varnished watercolor too, it has never been really accepted by many buyers, whereas with acrylic there is no debate). It does feel strange to have my paintings weighing so much less though!
