| At Rest original acrylic by Alison Nicholls, 12 x 16" |
There are numerous theories about the zebra and why it has its beautiful striped coat. Mostly they relate to the fact that it makes life difficult for predators - that targeting one striped zebra from a galloping striped herd is a tough task. Their markings may help them stay cool in the heat (as many antelope markings do). And yesterday I saw a theory that their striped coats may even deter biting insects.
But whatever the biological reason may be, as an artist I am thankful for the zebra's unique stripes. I use them to create bold compositions and show the lovely rounded figure of the animal. And because I use color to create a mood in my work, rather than portray the actual colors of the species, I am free to paint these flowing stripes in crimson or sky blue, depending on my intention for the painting.
Here's my latest Zebra painting - At Rest, based on a sketch I did in the Serengeti last year. Real zebra stripes are great camouflage (it can be remarkably difficult to spot a boldly striped zebra in the bush) but I reckon my zebras would cause quite a stir among tourists and lions alike if they were to appear in the Serengeti in these colors. At least they would be well camouflaged at sunset!
Until next time...
